UK Spouse Visa Documents Required from India (2026)
If you are applying for a UK spouse visa from India, GOV.UK asks for the same core documents as any partner applying from outside the UK. There is one extra step that applies because you live in India: a TB test from an approved clinic. The main list is:
- Your current passport, plus the photo pages and visa or entry stamps from any previous passports
- Your partner's passport and proof of their status in the UK, for example that they are a British citizen
- Your marriage certificate (or civil partnership certificate)
- Evidence that any previous marriage has ended, for either of you, for example a divorce certificate
- Evidence of your relationship, such as how you met and how often you are in contact
- Proof of English, unless an exemption applies
- Proof of income, for example 6 months of payslips, matching bank statements and an employer letter
- Evidence of accommodation in the UK
- Your TB test certificate from an approved clinic in India
- A certified translation of any document that is not in English or Welsh
All figures and rules were checked on GOV.UK on 29 September 2026. Rules can change, so confirm on GOV.UK before you apply.
How you apply from India
GOV.UK says you must apply online from outside the UK. After you apply, you prove your identity in one of two ways:
- The UK Immigration: ID Check app, if you are asked to use it. In most cases you do not then need an appointment.
- An appointment at a visa application centre, where you give your fingerprints and photograph and provide your supporting documents.
You must book and attend the appointment within 240 days of submitting your application. GOV.UK says most centres offer free appointments within 5 working days, and some charge £76.50 for a standard appointment. You can upload your documents yourself, or pay the centre for optional services such as scanning them for you.
GOV.UK says that if you apply from outside the UK, you will usually get a decision within 12 weeks. The application fee from outside the UK is £2,064 per person, plus the health surcharge. For the full costs, see our UK spouse visa fees breakdown.
The TB test: the India-specific document
India is on the GOV.UK list of countries where you need a tuberculosis (TB) test. GOV.UK says you need one if all three of these apply: you are coming to the UK for 6 months or more, you have lived in a listed country for 6 months or more, and you have lived there within the last 6 months. The first spouse visa lasts up to 2 years and 9 months, so if you have lived in India for at least 6 months and live there now, you need one.
Things to know:
- The test must be done at a clinic approved by the Home Office. GOV.UK publishes the list of approved clinics in India. It covers cities including New Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Pune, Chandigarh and Lucknow. The list was last updated on 21 September 2026, so check it before you book.
- The certificate is valid for 6 months from the date of your x-ray. Plan the date so the certificate is still valid when you apply.
Identity and status documents
You provide your current passport or other valid travel ID. GOV.UK also asks for copies of the photo pages and any visa or entry stamps from previous passports, and details of previous immigration applications.
For your partner, you give their name, date of birth, nationality and passport details, and proof of their right to be in the UK.
Marriage and relationship documents
Marriage certificate. Appendix FM says that if you are married, it must be a valid marriage, as specified in the rules. Appendix FM-SE says a marriage that took place outside the UK needs documentary proof that is valid under the law of the country where it took place.
If your marriage certificate or registration is in Hindi or another language that is not English, you also need a certified translation (see below).
Previous marriages. If either of you was married or in a civil partnership before, GOV.UK asks for evidence that it has ended, for example a divorce certificate.
Relationship evidence. GOV.UK asks how you met and how often you are in contact. If you have lived together, it asks how long, with documents such as council tax bills. It also asks about shared expenses. Our guide to proof of relationship documents covers this in detail.
Proof of English
GOV.UK says you need a good knowledge of English. The main ways to show it are:
- A Secure English Language Test (SELT) from an approved provider, at level A1 or above on the CEFR scale for the first visa.
- A degree taught in English. For a degree from outside the UK, you apply for an assessment from Ecctis. Ecctis gives you a code confirming that the qualification is equivalent to a UK bachelor's degree or higher and was taught in English. This can include degrees from Indian universities, if Ecctis confirms them. If you already have an Ecctis certificate from an earlier assessment, GOV.UK says you can use it instead of applying again.
Some people do not need to prove English, for example people over 65, or nationals of countries on the GOV.UK list, such as Australia, Canada and the USA. Check the full list on GOV.UK.
Proof of income
GOV.UK says you and your partner usually need to prove a combined income of at least £29,000 a year. For income from a job, GOV.UK asks for:
- 6 months of payslips, counting back from the day you apply
- bank statements that show the salary being paid in
- a letter from the employer, on headed paper, confirming the job, the salary and that the payslips are genuine
Online bank statements need either the bank's stamp on every page or a letter from the bank confirming they are authentic. The most recent payslip and statement must be dated no earlier than 28 days before you apply. Our guide to spouse visa bank statements and payslips shows how to build this set.
GOV.UK also lists other income sources, such as self-employment, pensions and cash savings above £16,000. Each has its own evidence list in Appendix FM-SE.
Accommodation
Appendix FM says you must provide evidence that there will be adequate accommodation for the family in the UK, without recourse to public funds. The home must be one you own or occupy exclusively. It is not adequate if it is or will be overcrowded, or if it breaks public health regulations. Common evidence includes a tenancy agreement or mortgage statement for the address.
Translations of Indian documents
GOV.UK asks for a certified translation of any document that is not in English or Welsh. Appendix FM-SE says you send the original and a full translation. The translation must be dated and include:
- confirmation that it is an accurate translation of the original
- the full name and signature of the translator, or an authorised official of the translation company
- the translator's or company's contact details
Check the language of each document. Put each translation straight after its original in your package.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a TB test for a UK spouse visa from India? Yes, if all three apply: you are coming to the UK for 6 months or more, you have lived in India (or another listed country) for 6 months or more, and you have lived there within the last 6 months. The test must be done at an approved clinic. The certificate is valid for 6 months from the x-ray date.
Can I use my Indian degree to prove my English? GOV.UK says a degree from outside the UK needs an Ecctis assessment. Ecctis confirms whether it is equivalent to a UK bachelor's degree or higher and was taught in English. If it does not confirm this, you can take an approved English test instead.
My marriage certificate is in Hindi. What do I send? The original certificate and a full certified translation. The translation must be dated and include the translator's confirmation of accuracy, full name, signature and contact details.
Where do I give my fingerprints and photo in India? At a visa application centre, unless you are asked to use the ID Check app. You will be told how to book when you apply, and you must attend within 240 days.
How Stratovisa helps
A spouse application from India brings together documents from two countries: your Indian certificates, TB test and translations, and your partner's UK payslips, statements and housing papers. Stratovisa builds the checklist for your case from your intake answers, gives each document its own upload slot, and shows what is still missing. When everything is in place, you download one organised package, with each translation next to its original, ready for the online application. See how it works for the spouse and partner visa.
