UK Spouse Visa Sponsor Letter: Sample and Structure

A UK spouse visa sponsor letter is a signed letter from the UK partner (the "sponsor") about the relationship and the couple's life in the UK. GOV.UK does not list it as a required document. Many couples still include one, because it gives their documents some context. A sponsor letter often covers these points:

  1. Who the sponsor is: full name, date of birth, nationality and status in the UK
  2. The relationship: how and when the couple met, key dates, marriage or civil partnership
  3. Time together and contact while apart
  4. Where the couple will live in the UK
  5. The financial position, matching the financial documents
  6. Plans for life together in the UK
  7. A list of the documents enclosed, then the date and the sponsor's signature

A sample layout is below. All figures and rules were checked on GOV.UK on 9 October 2026.

Is a sponsor letter required?

No. GOV.UK's family visa pages list the documents to provide, such as passports, relationship evidence, proof of income and certified translations. A sponsor letter is not on that list. Appendix FM-SE of the Immigration Rules sets out the specified evidence for family applications, and it does not ask for a sponsor letter or a personal statement about the relationship.

GOV.UK also says you may need other documents depending on your circumstances, "for example a sponsorship form from your family member in the UK". That sponsorship form (form SU07) is a separate government form. GOV.UK says it is for sponsoring an adult dependent relative. It is not the same as a sponsor letter.

What the rules do say is what the application must show. Under Appendix FM, paragraph E-ECP.2.6 says the relationship must be "genuine and subsisting". Paragraph E-ECP.2.10 says the couple must intend to "live together permanently in the UK". Documents show these things. A sponsor letter adds the couple's own account, and the documents it mentions are the evidence.

Sponsor letter or cover letter: what is the difference?

The two are easy to confuse.

  • The cover letter is an index. It lists what is in the package and where to find it. See our spouse visa cover letter template.
  • The sponsor letter is a personal statement from the UK partner. It is written in the first person ("I met my wife in 2021") and signed by the sponsor.

Some applicants also add a separate statement from the applicant. That is optional too.

Writing tips

  • Use facts, not feelings alone. Dates, places and names are more useful to a reader than general statements. A sentence like "We visited Manila together from 2 to 20 March 2025" can be checked against a ticket or a photo.
  • Match every fact to a document. If the letter gives a salary, it should be the same figure as on the employer letter. If it gives a wedding date, it should be the same as on the certificate. Read the letter next to your documents before you sign it.
  • Keep it short. Cover the points above and stop there.
  • Use plain language. Short sentences, no legal terms. The reader is a caseworker, and the letter only has to be clear.
  • Sign and date it. Use a handwritten signature on a printed copy, then scan it, or a clear electronic signature.
  • Use full names. Write names the same way as on the passports.

The finances section: what a letter cannot do

The finances paragraph should describe the evidence, not replace it. The published threshold for a partner visa is a combined income of at least £29,000 a year. GOV.UK says how you prove that depends on how you got the income, and the proof is the documents: payslips, bank statements, employer letters and so on. See our guide to spouse visa bank statements and payslips for what a complete set looks like.

A support letter from someone else is a different thing. Paragraph 1(b) of Appendix FM-SE says "promises of third party support will not be accepted", except in the limited cases set out in paragraph 21A. So a letter from a parent or friend that promises money in the future is not accepted as financial evidence, apart from the limited cases in paragraph 21A.

If the sponsor letter is not in English

GOV.UK asks for a certified translation of any document that is not in English or Welsh. For specified documents, paragraph 39B(f) of Part 1 of the Immigration Rules gives more detail, and Appendix FM-SE paragraph 1(j) uses the same wording for financial evidence. You provide the original document and a full translation. The translation must be dated. It must confirm that it is accurate, and include the full name and signature of the translator or an authorised official of the translation company, and the translator's or company's contact details. Writing the letter in English from the start avoids this step.

Where the letter goes in the package

GOV.UK says you will be told how to provide your documents when you apply. In an organised package, a simple order is:

  1. Cover letter (the index)
  2. Sponsor letter
  3. Applicant's statement, if you include one
  4. The evidence the letters refer to: identity, relationship, finances, accommodation

Save the letter as one PDF with a clear name, for example sponsor-letter-2026-10.pdf. For how relationship evidence is usually grouped, see proof of relationship documents.

Frequently asked questions

Is a sponsor letter mandatory for a UK spouse visa? No. It is not on the GOV.UK document list, and Appendix FM-SE does not ask for one. Many couples include it as a personal statement alongside the required documents.

How long should a spouse visa sponsor letter be? There is no set length. One to three pages is common.

Who signs the sponsor letter? The UK partner, who is the sponsor. If the applicant writes a statement too, they sign their own statement separately.

Can a family member write a letter promising to support us financially? Appendix FM-SE paragraph 1(b) says promises of third party support will not be accepted, except in the limited cases in paragraph 21A.

Does the sponsor letter need to be in English? If it is not in English or Welsh, GOV.UK asks for a certified translation. Writing it in English avoids that step.

How Stratovisa helps

The hard part of a sponsor letter is often the details: the right dates, the visits, how long you have been in contact. Stratovisa can draft a sponsor's personal statement from a WhatsApp or Line chat export. It picks out the key milestones, such as when you met, visits and the wedding, and writes a first draft in the sponsor's voice. You can edit the draft, and the sponsor checks it and signs it. The letter sits in its own slot next to the cover letter and your other documents, and you download one organised package at the end. See how it works for the spouse and partner visa.
